Patient Navigation Certificate Level 1
Level 1/Foundations
Program Description
**NEW! This program strengthens the advocacy role of Navigators!**
Navigators play a critical role in supporting individuals and families as they move through the healthcare system.
Patient Navigation Level 1 provides a comprehensive, micro-credentialed introduction to the foundational skills and knowledge needed to guide patients and families through the complexities of care. The updated curriculum now places greater emphasis on:
**Understanding the impact of cultural identity, lived experience, and systemic barriers on healthcare access.
**Building inclusive communication skills to support patients from diverse backgrounds, including newcomers, Indigenous Peoples, LGBTQ2+ communities, and individuals living with disabilities.
**Applying trauma-informed and anti-oppressive practices in navigation work.
**Strengthening the advocacy role of navigators—helping clients speak up for their needs, addressing barriers, and promoting fair access to care at individual, organizational, and system levels.
Through interactive learning, participants will explore the patient journey in depth, highlighting common barriers to care and equipping them with practical strategies to address these challenges. The course emphasizes empathetic, informed, and professional guidance across diverse healthcare settings.
By the end of the program, participants will have the tools and confidence to make a meaningful impact—supporting patients in understanding diagnoses, accessing resources, and navigating transitions of care—while fostering trust, collaboration, and inclusion in every interaction.
