IV & Infusion Therapy Certificate

Western Canada Edition

Program Description

Whether you are a new graduate (or soon to be graduated), RN, RPN or LPN, Paramedic, Physician (or soon to be), or Physician’s Assistant, have little or no experience in IV infusion therapy or need a refresher to return to practice, this course is for you. Attendees obtain knowledge and skills to insert Peripheral Vascular Access Devices (PVADs), maintain all types of central vascular access devices (CVADs) and manage patients receiving infusion therapies in a variety of care settings.

The course will provide evidence-based education in vascular access and set standards for infusion therapy and patient safety, with an emphasis on high-risk settings such as home care, clinics and long-term care. The program is geared towards working health professionals who administer or manage VADs and infusion therapy for organizations.

The program will be delivered in a hybrid format (online and in-person) which includes four live webcasts in the evening and a skills laboratory workshop offered in-person. Virtual skills lab is available upon request.

How You Will Benefit:
Practice administering vascular access and infusion therapy in a simulated learning environment using devices such as vascular access devices, infusion pumps, and anatomical models. Increase confidence, skills, and expertise specific to the delivery of vascular access and infusion therapy such as venipuncture techniques, infection control techniques and others.

Develop theory, assessment and critical thinking to recognize and troubleshoot complications early and reduce malpractice and trauma.

Apply evidence-based best practices that comply with standards set by provincial, national regulatory bodies to optimize patient safety outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this 20-hour IV infusion therapy course, attendees gain knowledge and skills to: Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to vascular access and infusion therapy. Insert short peripheral vascular access catheters with minimal attempts Examine the legal and quality assurance aspects related to infusion therapy practices to align with ethical and professional practice including documentation standards. Explain principles of aseptic technique specific to vascular access insertion and maintenance. Clinical guidelines and management of diverse infusion therapies Describe assessment and considerations for vascular access device selection. Identify the categories of devices available for vascular access and use and manage various types in a clinical setting Gain confidence in completing a PICC dressing change and access/de-accessing implanted vascular access port.

Duration/Time Commitment

3 hrs/day over 4 days online with a full day live lab

Hybrid Online with an in-seat lab - Live Instructor Led sessions; Skills Lab is in-person ( see course session for location).

In addition to class time, one (1) hour of self study time per course day
