This course is specifically designed for nurses working in harm reduction who provide essential support to individuals at risk of or living with compromised skin integrity. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by vulnerable populations, the program emphasizes a compassionate and practical approach to wound care. Using Micro-credentials, participants will learn strategies to address wounds effectively while incorporating harm reduction principles, ensuring that care is both accessible and aligned with the realities of the communities they serve.

This practical course equips nurses working in harm reduction with the essentials of wound care in community and street settings. Learn to spot problems early, support clients with basic care, and know when to connect them with more specialized medical services. Build confidence, share experiences, and earn a Certificate of Completion.

The program focuses on practical wound care skills, including techniques for prevention and management tailored to high-risk environments. Participants will also explore the social and systemic barriers that impact healthcare access for marginalized groups, gaining the knowledge and confidence to navigate these complexities. By integrating wound care expertise into their harm reduction framework, attendees will leave equipped to make a meaningful difference in promoting health and healing within their communities.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to: 1.Identify common wound types and assess skin integrity in at-risk populations. 2.Apply harm reduction principles to wound care practices. 3.Perform basic wound care techniques, including cleaning and dressing. 4.Support individuals in preventing wounds through education and practical interventions. 5.Communicate effectively with healthcare providers to ensure timely care and collaboration.

Duration/Time Commitment

3 hrs/day over 4 days online

Fully Online - Live Instructor Led sessions

In addition to the live learning, allow for one (1) hour of self-directed learning. This program includes live virtual sessions and self-directed learning components, designed for flexibility and engagement to meet the unique needs of harm reduction workers.

1.Introduction to Wound Care in Harm Reduction Settings oOverview of wound types and risk factors in vulnerable populations oThe role of harm reduction workers in wound prevention and care 2.Harm Reduction and Wound Prevention Strategies oIntegrating harm reduction principles into client care skin/wound management oStrategies for maintaining skin health in challenging environments 3.Basic Wound Care Techniques oCleaning, dressing, and managing wounds safely oDemonstrations and guided practice of simple wound care 4.Communication and Advocacy oReporting and collaborating with healthcare providers oSupporting clients in accessing additional care 5.Hands-On Practice and Scenario-Based Learning oRole-playing and case studies relevant to harm reduction settings oReinforcing skills through practical application

Requirements for Enrolment

This course is ideal for:
• Harm reduction workers supporting vulnerable and at-risk individuals.
• Community outreach workers seeking foundational wound care knowledge.
No prior wound care training is required—this course provides a comprehensive introduction tailored to harm reduction work.

Important Note for Nurses and Regulated Health Professionals: This program is not a substitute for the Wound Care Level 1 or 2 courses, which provide full clinical training aligned with your professional scope of practice.

This program is offered in English. It is your responsibility to ensure you meet the language requirements. You may be asked to demonstrate language proficiency.
